About me:
I am a visual artist with a practice grounded in a life-long passionate love for photography, video and also digital montage of both still and moving lens-based images. My work so far can broadly be divided into two main strands:
WUNDERCAMERA:
I have loved to visit museums of all kinds as long as I can think and this love has developed into a main thematical focus on museums, collections and exhibition culture. This research concern has resulted in numerous image cycles, a series of groups exhibitions and my written PhD thesis 'On Posing'. As part of this overall project I came to use the name 'Museum Clausum' as an artist's pseudonym. As an umbrella title to my projects in this field I use the title Wundercamera and I also gave that title to the exhibition series. In view of the medium of photography, in these projects I never use any image manipulation other than a very conscious use of in-camera techniques.
RARITIES IN PICTURES:
Another collection of projects is thematically more open, though an often underlying theme here is a reflecting on what it means in today's world to be a body and a human being with a special focus on the concept of the 'mind'/'soul' and 'body' separation. This includes to investigate representations of both 'body' and 'mind' in various cultural spheres including modern media and of course art istself - inside and outside of museums.
Whilst the starting point for the making of these images is usually photographic, digital montaging is really the core of making all of these works. As an umbrella title, I use the title 'Rarities in Pictures' which, like 'Museum Clausum' is adopted from Sir Thomas Browne's 'Musaeum Clausum'.
ARTICLES / TEXTE: In both thematic areas of my work, there is also an inherent questioning of the power structures surrounding art, art making, art promotion and presentation: Art is often employed to communicate and naturalise narratives that suit power structures, as is most clear to see in museum culture.
I am also reflecting on these issues in an ongoing series of articles, written for King Kong Magazine and I am in the process to expand on this writing. Some of the articles are republished on this site in the ARTICLES section.
Some more detailed information on all of the above can be found via the info menu as well as on some of the project introduction pages.
